28th February 2009 - Liverpool

The following reports about what the National Exceutive Committee have been up to on your behalf since the last meeting, are available in pdf on request, by using either the contact form, or by emailing us at younglawyers@nbjl.co.uk:

  • Kat Gibson, JLD Chair
  • Jude Perkins, Events
  • Kevin Poulter, Pro Bono
  • Alan Mak, Communications
  • Peter Wright, Law Society Council member
  • Katie Rich, Student Representative

Specific areas of interest discussed were:

  • JLD gets involved with Raleigh International
  • LPC fees unfairly increased by 10% at College of Law, BPP and Kaplan
  • Law Society Council and special interest Committee seats are up for grabs and as open to Junior Lawyers as to anyone
  • The JLD Annual Conference and Ball is booked to be in Birmingham on the 11th July 2009.
  • The JLD Helpline is active: 08000 856131. You can call this free counselling service to discuss any issues concerning you as a junior lawyer. It's staffed by other junior lawyer volunteers who will be able to help you.
  • The JLD ramps up its efforts to co-ordinate Pro Bono initiatives
  • The Website needs to be continually updated with your contributions, so don't be shy!
  • The current training structures, are being reviewed by the JLD and SRA, particularly in light of changes the Legal Services Act will bring, and the effects of the current economic climate. There are already too many solicitors to be sustainable, and every year more and more students are taking the LPC.
  • Implications of the current economic recession for junior lawyers. On this point, please see the first JLD Webinar, "Is the economic downturn affecting you?" for helpful information at www.juniorlawyers.com.

For more information on any of the subjects discussed, please contact us through the contact form, or our email address: younglawyers@nbjl.co.uk.
